A slow start by the Melfort Mustangs saw their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League winning streak snapped at eight games as they fell 3-2 to the Estevan Bruins in Estevan on Oct. 6.
The Mustangs found themselves behind the eight-ball early against the Bruins as they scored to take the lead just 1:38 into the first period.
The Bruins then extended their lead to two goals later in the period, but Loch Morrison scored his fourth of the year on the power play to send the Mustangs into the first intermission trailing but just one goal.
The two teams traded goals in the second period as the Bruins regained their two goal lead, before Jake Misskey scored his first career SJHL goal to cut the Mustangs’ deficit back to one goal.
The two teams played to a scoreless third period as the Bruins handed the Mustangs their first loss of the season.
Evan Plotnik was once again solid between the pipes for the Mustangs, kicking aside 30 of the 33 shots he faced as the Mustangs were outshot 33-18.
In addition to losing the battle on the shot clock the Mustangs also lost the special teams battle as the Bruins finished the evening 2-for-8 with the man advantage, while the Mustangs finished the night just 1-for-5.
Oct. 7
The Melfort Mustangs dug themselves another hole and could not climb out of it as they fell 3-2 to the Weyburn Red Wings in overtime in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action in Weyburn on Oct. 7.
One night after falling behind 2-0 against the Estevan Bruins, the Mustangs once again fell behind 2-0 as the Red Wings scored once in the first period and once more in the second.
Despite digging the hole the Mustangs began chipping away at the lead as Kalem Zary scored his second goal of the season at 11:56 of the second period to cut the Mustangs deficit to one heading into the third.
In the final frame, Zach Anderson scored his first career SJHL goal at 9:40, beating Red Wings goaltender Arik Weersink to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Just over two minutes into the extra session, Mike Eskra beat Plotnik as the Red Wings escaped with the win, handing the Mustangs their second straight loss.
Plotnik was solid once again between the pipes for the Mustangs turning aside 22 of the 25 shots he faced as the Mustangs outshot the Red Wings 31-25.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to the Melville Millionaires, as they host the Millionaires on Oct. 11, when they will look to put a stop to their two game losing skid.
