The completion of construction for Melfort’s new skatepark has been delayed until the spring.

In a memo from the contractor, New Line Skateparks Inc., sent Nov. 3, they decided to stop construction with three weeks worth of work left because the weather forecast predicted would have harmed the quality of the concrete.

“It would have been really nice to have seen it completed on time,” said Coun. April Phillips, the chair of the community services committee. “We feel that the integrity of the park is the most important thing and if delaying it helps the integrity of the park, then that’s what we have to do.”

She added after the Nov. 13 council meeting that when it comes to construction, delays happen, but the city had assurances from New Line that completion of the skatepark as soon as possible in the spring is a priority.

“Once spring comes, it will be picked up and we’ll make sure that we don’t have any problems with the concrete.”

The delay will not cost the city extra money, nor will the city benefit from any financial penalty from New Line due to the delay.
