A mental health assessment has been ordered for a 29-year-old man who allegedly assaulted a 74-year-old man before fleeing with an axe.

Jordan Andrew Scott Nelson of Meadow Lake is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault with a weapon. He has been in custody since his arrest in March. Nelson was arrested on March 11, 2021, after an incident on March 10.

Police say that at about 1:20 p.m. they had received a report of a serious assault in a rural area of the R.M. of Meadow Lake. The victim was taken to hospital in serious condition.

The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. Less than an hour later, at 2:13 p.m., the Meadow Lake RCMP issued a SaskAlert warning the public in the area that a dangerous man with an axe was at large.

Officers from multiple detachments and units immediately flooded the area searching for Nelson. Within half an hour police found Nelson and arrested him without incident.

Police say the victim and Nelson were known to one another.

Nelson appears next in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on July 12.
