The Melfort Mustangs picked up a huge 4-2 victory in La Ronge against the Ice Wolves.

Despite the win, Trevor Blevins, the team’s head coach, admitted the Feb. 28 game was not his team’s best effort.

“I thought our effort was actually a little bit less than maybe some of the losses. I thought we had some better efforts than that one but we found a way to win the game.”

The game got off to a terrible start for the Mustangs as they trailed 2-0 6:52 into the first period.

But instead of falling apart, the Mustangs came alive, getting a first period goal from Reed Gunville, a shorthanded goal in the second from Matthew Hermary and third period goals from Dakota Boutin and Justin Ball into the empty net.

After a wobble to start the game, Blevins was really pleased to see the Mustangs remain mentally tough.

“It was great that we stuck with it and came back that was huge for our group.”

The goals from Hermary and Ball were just their seventh of the season each and was Ball’s first in a month.

Blevins was particularly pleased to see both players provide some depth scoring for the Mustangs.

“You want to see the confidence in those guys for sure. You’re going to need that all the way through.”

The win kept the Mustangs one point ahead of the Melville Millionaires, who beat the Notre Dame Hounds 2-0 for the final playoff spot in the SJHL.
