A new face will be chairing one of the city’s most powerful committees.

Coun. Trent Mitchell was appointed the chair of the legislative and finance standing committee by the mayor as part of  an annual reshuffling of committee appointees. Coun. Doug Terry remains the chair of the works and utilities standing committee, and Coun. April Phillips remains chair of the community services standing committee.

“Coun. Mitchell has shown a keen interest in the legislative and finance portfolio,” said Rick Lang, Melfort's mayor. “He’s always asking questions with respect to legislative and finance and it’s never a bad idea to give a new councillor some further experience.”

Mitchell replaces Coun. Glenn George as chair of the committee.

“I know that Coun. George has wanted to be on the Community Services Committee for years and so that’s where he’s going,” Lang said. “I think that he’ll enjoy that, he’ll be very excited about it, he’ll be very interested in being part of it.”

Lang said he believes the appointment is a good move.

“I feel that Coun. Mitchell will be up to the task and be able to handle it. I talked to him before making the appointment and he agreed that he was up to the challenge. I’m sure we’ll find out that’s the case.”
