MELFORT — S/Sgt. Adare Guest is a fresh face to the Melfort RCMP as their new commanding officer, but not to the region.
Originally from a farm near Mistatim, Guest spent 23 years on the force, graduating from the academy at Regina in 1996. He worked postings in Swift Current, Saskatoon, Regina, Rose Valley, Carrot River and most recently, Humboldt.
Guest started his role with the Melfort detachment on Aug. 20. He said one of the reasons he chose Melfort was the proximity to home.
“My wife is from the area as well, we both still have a lot of family and friends out this way. We really enjoy the community here and a second benefit is it’s really close to family and friends,” Guest said.
“Having grown up in this area, I always really enjoyed this part of the province, so it’s a good opportunity to get back up to this area.”
Since he has been back, Guest said he has been finding the community welcoming but confessed he hasn’t had a chance to get out in the community and meet people.
“But that’s going to be my goal over the next number of weeks – try to get out a little bit more and have some facetime in the community and a chance to meet the residences here, and a chance to meet the community.”
He said every place he moves to is different, and each takes a little bit of time to get comfortable with the whole environment.
“But it’s been very good – and having been posted in this area before, we’re familiar with a lot of the community here from my dealings here in Carrot River when I had to come in for court,” Guest said. “And also as a kid growing up we came into the fair here in town.”
He said in coming from a rural background, he has an interest in focusing on rural crime.
“Obviously coming from a rural background I got a very keen interest in working in the rural community and focusing a lot on rural crime that has been making the news lately. It seems to be a – I don’t want to say a growing problem – but it is an issue that is prevalent across the province.”
Outside of work, his hobbies include fishing, golfing and camping.
Guest said one benefit of moving to Melfort was getting closer to the outdoor activities he likes to do.
“I still have a very young family so I’m very active at the rink; both of my boys are active in hockey. One played Lacroix here in Melfort this spring.”
