For students who want to volunteer or fundraise for charity, high school clubs is a good way to do this.
For students at Humboldt Collegiate, they now have the Student Action Squad to help them get out into the community.
Originally this was the Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) group and teachers, Jamie White and Stacey Jackson, really believed in the message.
However, they also saw the variety of social issues that plague the world beyond drinking and driving.
“We felt we could get more students involved and passionate about their group by opening it up to all sorts of things,” says Jackson in an email.
So far 30 students have shown interest and more and more students are stopping by and expressing interest, she says.
Students Maya Berscheid and Madison Mueller kicked off the squad with a fundraising week with a pancake breakfast, float sale, with the money raised going to the Red Cross and hurricane relief.
For the future, the squad wants to think about helping out locally as well as internationally. The group is planning to help out at places like the Humboldt and District Food Bank, the Humboldt and District SPCA, and the Good Neighbour Store.
“We are very excited to see what this year has in store for us,” says Jackson.
