HUMBOLDT — Two new high efficiency boilers will be installed at the Uniplex at a cost of almost $59,000, excluding tax.

The winning bid, out of seven, was SaskWest Mechanical.

“The current units are nearing the end of their life expectancy and one of the units currently requires $10,000 worth of repairs,” said Michael Ulriksen, Humboldt’s leisure services director, to council at a special meeting Aug. 17.

According to documents presented to council, the project is expected to be complete within weeks of awarding the contract.

“The tender does include the removal of the current boilers, as well as the purchase and installation of the new boilers, all electrical and plumbing required to do the work,” Ulriksen said.

The project is being funded by the province’s Municipal Economic Enhancement Program, which aims to boost economic activity in the face of the pandemic by funding infrastructure projects that can be completed relatively quickly.

$75,000 was awarded from the province for the boiler replacement project.

Rob Muench, Humboldt’s mayor, asked if the city would lose out on any leftover money after the project was completed.

Joe Day, the city manager, said that it was his sense the money could be allocated to other Municipal Economic Enhancement Program-funded projects, which the city has eight. A new turning lane on Highway 5 is expected to be over budget, so the money could go there. A project to expand the amount of work being done to replace water mains of 16th Street in 2021 was also designed to expand or contract based on the financial status of the other projects.
