The Nipawin Chamber of Commerce wants to know how people feel about carbon tax.

More specifically, the Chamber would like to hear from its members.

“We are an advocate for businesses in Nipawin and district and we would like their feelings on the proposed carbon tax,” explained Mark Knox, president of the Chamber.

The survey, which is posted on the organization’s Facebook page, has one question: “Do you agree with the proposed carbon tax?”

Respondents can answer yes or no, and provide additional feedback in a comment box. The survey will be open for about a month, said Knox.

“The chamber board will discuss and decide where to go from there. We have to have a majority to either be in favour or not in favour, and then we’ll decide what to do.

“We would send a letter to all levels of government stating our position on it.”

Premier Brad Wall has come out strongly against a federally-imposed carbon tax. Last month, Scott Moe, Minister of Environment, spoke at a Chamber dinner about his government’s opposition to the tax, which Moe said would be the largest tax increase in Saskatchewan’s history.

Moe expected the carbon tax would cost $2.5 billion, compared to the $2.8 billion in income tax paid by Saskatchewanians.

Meanwhile, according to an article on CTV News, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a Saskatoon group in January that the province won’t be adversely affected by the carbon tax.

“On the issue of folks in Saskatchewan being vulnerable to carbon pricing, the fact is every penny collected in Saskatchewan will stay in Saskatchewan. It will be up to Premier Wall to determine how to best help those most vulnerable.”
