The Town of Nipawin has set its tax levy – and it has decided to reduce the portion that every property owner must pay the same dollar amount for, the base tax.
Coun. Joyce Watts said the reduction is part of a three-year strategy.
“One of the goals was to reduce the base tax and we used the criteria we had done during budgeting,” she said. “We used the criteria we had done during budgeting and we had identified essential services. The base tax has to pay for the essential services that were identified.”
“To get our base tax to meet our essential services as we’ve calculated,” said Rennie Harper, Nipawin’s mayor, “will take us a couple of more years.”
Base Tax | Mill Rate | Total
Residental Taxes (Improved) | $1,350.72 | ~0.362% of total assessment
$100,000 | $1,350.72 | $362.40 | $1,713.12 |

$200,000 | $1,350.72 | $724.80 | $2,075.52 |
Residential owners will pay a $1,350.72 base tax plus approximately 0.362 per cent of their property’s total assessed value. Last year, the base tax was $1,537.
Comparing this year’s total tax bill to last year’s is difficult due to the fact that all property values were reassessed. The average assessment increase in town was 35 per cent; all of the different categories of property vary wildly from that.
If somebody owns a home assessed at $125,000, they will pay a total of $1,803.72.

Coun. Ray Serack said council examined a variety of options on how to tax Nipawin’s residents before choosing this approach.
The Town of Nipawin will collect a total of $4.4 million from taxes this year, an increase of 2.2 per cent.
