The nomination period is now open for the municipal byelection on April 16.

City Hall officials have started accepting nominations for the open city council position available as of Feb. 20 and will continue to do so for the next few weeks, with nominations closing on Nomination Day March 12.

According to the City's website, to run in the by-election candidates must be 18 years old on the day of the by-election and a Canadian citizen. As well, candidates must also be a resident of Saskatchewan for at least six consecutive months and resident of the City for at least three consecutive months immediately preceding the date on which nomination papers are submitted.

The byelection is to fill the council seat left vacant by the resignation in January of Trent Houk. More details about the byelection can be found at the city's website www.cityofnb.ca.

Candidates running in the byelection should know that the News-Optimist/Regional Optimist plans to run a special byelection page that will profile the candidates.

The format for that profile page will be similar to past election races. The newspaper plans to provide some details about each candidate's background, and candidates will be able to make submissions (in 200 words or less) on why they should be elected.

The plan is for all the profiles to be published in the newspaper and online in the week leading up to the byelection. More details on those plans will be made available to all candidates once nominations close.

Also, all candidates are encouraged to contact city hall reporter John Cairns at the News-Optimist/Regional Optimist at 306-445-7261 extension 249 to let the newspaper know about their candidacies as soon as nominations are filed.
