The soon-to-be-completed Northland Power plant near North Battleford has attracted interest from city officials in Swift Current.

Three representatives from Swift Current were in North Battleford recently to find out how North Battleford was going to supply wastewater effluent to the Northland Power facility from its wastewater treatment plant.

Details of the visit were provided to North Battleford's municipal services committee members in a memo Jan. 15 from Stewart Schafer, Public Works director.

The tour was conducted the afternoon of Jan.14. According to Schafer, the delegation was introduced to wastewater plant foreman Cliff Dyck and they toured the Northland pumping station that will be pumping the effluent to the plant. Schafer reported questions were posed about the quantity and quality of the effluent, controls and monitoring systems, who performs system checks and other information.

Afterwards, the group met Richard Skibinski, construction project manager for the Northland Power plant, at the construction site east of the city. There, Schafer reported the Swift Current reps asked questions about the construction techniques, time schedules, plant operations, production quotas and estimated demands, before touring the Northland Power facility.

The deal to provide city wastewater effluent to the Northland Power plant was one of the highlighted features of the project when it was announced in 2010. The effluent is to be used for cooling purposes.

The new 261 megawatt natural-gas fired power plant is expected to be completed and commissioned this coming spring.
