HUMBOLDT — The land at the old Shell gas station site at the corner of Highway 5 and 14th Street is being remediated so it could be used for other purposes.
“Shell still owns the site and they've engaged SNC-Lavalin to undertake remediation of the land,” said Frank Carpentieri, Humboldt’s planning co-ordinator.
Contaminated soil will be removed for the site, to a depth of around six metres. New, clean soil will then be brought in to replace it.
The work is to be done before the start of winter.
Carpentieri said at this point, nobody's contacted the city’s planning department about any new structures at the site after remediation is complete.
