WAKAW — One man is dead and others injured after a five-vehicle collision in a construction zone eight kilometers east of Wakaw on Highway 41.
Wakaw RCMP responded on Aug. 25 at approximately 1:00 p.m. The highway was closed to traffic for a period of time.
Police said the collision happened when a semi-truck entered a construction zone and rear-ended the other vehicles involved.
A 69-year-old man, who was the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle stopped immediately in front of the semi-truck, was declared deceased on scene. Other motorists sustained non-life threatening injuries and were either treated on scene or transported to hospital.
Police said 38-year-old Gurmeet Singh Cheema was arrested on scene for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. He made his first court appearance Aug. 26 at Melfort Provincial Court.
RCMP said alcohol is not believed to be a factor at this time.
Wakaw EMS, a Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Reconstructionist, Wakaw Fire Department, Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service, Department of Highways and Prince Albert Victim Services all attended the scene.
