Honeywood (Dr A J Porter) Heritage Nursery near Parkside participated in the Shellbrook Parkland artisan tour the weekend of June 8 and 9. Although the weather was blustery and rainy, many individuals still visited the nursery and its exhibitors, Ruby Hannigan and Barb Grimm, Henriette Schultz, Carol Hofferd and Doug Peake.

Ruby Hannigan and Barb Grimm offered visitors a selection of distinctive honeycomb or moulded beeswax candles as well as locally harvested, processed and creamed honey.

Henriette Schultz is well known for her unique talent of cross-stitching portraits. Besides creating custom orders, Henriette also completes a variety of tastefully selected patterns. All of her works are sold matted and framed.

Carol Hofferd specializes in stained glass art. She displayed a variety of her creations from window sun catchers and ornaments to formed and molded glass trays and bowls.

Doug Peake demonstrated his skill of woodturning from local and west coast wood varieties. He displayed birdhouses, pens, bells, rolling pins, bowls and mini toy tops that were created in his workshop.

Visitors toured the nursery and had the opportunity to purchase stock originating from the heritage site. Lilies, ornamental and fruit-bearing trees, shrubs and an assortment of perennials were on offer. Judy Harley, site manager, demonstrated how to make detergent from rhubarb. Bottles of the product were also available for sale in the gift shop inside the original log home, which also offers custom-made jewelry, preserves made from fruits and vegetables grown at Honeywood, souvenirs and specially designed Glen Scrimshaw prints of Honeywood Nursery.

Besides being a provincial heritage site, the nursery is a facility that has lots to offer individuals from all walks of life. Photographers, nature lovers, birdwatchers, gardeners, historians and more can enjoy the various aspects of the 80-acre haven located off Highway 40, south of Parkside.
