Twelve hogs went into feeding an estimated 750-800 people at Englefeld’s 44th annual Hogfest on June 26-28.

The celebration is a fundraiser for Englefeld’s recreation board and will go toward any needed improvements in the arena and clubs in town, such as the dance club.
Though the dinner was the centerpiece, attendees could also take in slo-pitch, basketball, a wiener roast, fireworks, kids’ activities, a penny auction, a dance, and a pancake breakfast.

Attendance was a bit down, but the organizers were expecting that, as it shared the weekend with events in St. Gregor and LeRoy.

“I expect that will affect us a little bit but I don’t think it will be anything major,” said Charlie Biemans, president of the recreation board.

It certainly didn’t look like it affected the event: the arena was packed full of people for the dinner, and the lineups were long.

Biemans said the weekend overall went very well and that the weather was great.

This year’s Hogfest stuck to a formula and didn’t do anything different from other years. However, next year is the 45th Hogfest, which is going to be held in conjunction with Englefeld’s 100th anniversary. Biemans said there will be a parade and trade show, among other events.

“A lot of people come home for Hogfest. They treat it like Christmas,” Biemans said. “There are lots of people here I know, and lots of people I don’t … We have a pretty good draw here.”
