RCMP are reporting they remain on the scene of an ongoing investigation in the Maidstone and Paynton area.

According to an RCMP news release, the situation began last night in the Edmonton Police Service and Alberta RCMP area, and the individuals involved may be armed and are considered dangerous. Media are reporting that the investigation is related to two carjacking cases in the Edmonton area the previous evening.

By early Thursday afternoon, RCMP had confirmed that one adult male was arrested in the Maidstone area in relation to the investigation that morning. No charges have been laid, but the individual was in custody.

Police are now searching for a second individual described as an adult male, around 5’9” tall who is believed to be travelling on foot.

Police have issued news releases Thursday advising people not to approach suspicious persons or vehicles and to report any suspicious activity, vehicles or persons in the Maidstone area to police immediately. The public and the news media is also being asked to stay away from these areas with the heavy police presence for safety reasons.

There was no change to the situation according to the latest update issued by the RCMP at 3:40 p.m.

Detachment members as well as RCMP Emergency Response Team members were still on the scene this afternoon. According to police, members were attending farm yards/acreages in rural areas near Paynton/Maidstone as part of their investigation. The RCMP has indicated these activities will continue on into the evening.
