WILKIE — It was like any other summer day on the Hango family farm, until it wasn’t. Zachery’s leg got caught by an auger and sustained serious injuries. He was airlifted to Saskatoon, where physicians operated on his foot, resulting in amputation. His friend, Joe Mooney, has since started a GoFundMe page to help with some of the costs associated with an amputation.
“Zach has a difficult and long journey in front of him: multiple surgeries, rehab for months, emotional recovery and how to cope with a prosthetic,” said Mooney on the fundraising page.
The young Wilkie man, who is a student at Lakeland College, was described as “hardworking, dependable and determined”, “a friend who always seems to be there when you need him”.
“In Canada, it costs anywhere from $6,000 to $10,000 for a prosthetic foot, depending on the model and technology. That does not include hospital bills, travel, rehab or replacement every few years,” added Mooney on GoFundMe.
To date, more than 80 per cent of the $45,000 goal has been raised, reaching more than $37,000. These funds will help cover a higher quality prosthetic foot, ongoing medical and rehabilitation costs, travel and accommodations for follow-up visits, as well as education and living costs while he recovers.
“Zach has supported his friends, his university and his community through thick and thin, now it’s our turn. Every donation helps and if you can’t donate money, please share this page,” said Mooney.
“Let’s get Zach back on his feet again and remind him he’s not alone on this journey.”
