Local authors series coming to Macklin Library

Authors in the series have to be originally from or currently living in the Macklin area.

MACKLIN — The Macklin Library will be celebrating local authors throughout August, with a special Local Authors Series showcasing three local writers, starting Aug. 6.

“The criteria are pretty simple, they are either originally from or currently living in the Macklin area. We are always looking for local authors to speak,” said Macklin librarian Jennifer Wotschell.

The three authors who will be visiting the Macklin branch will be Tanya Dow, Brenda Gerling and Pak Wong. Wong had reached out to the library about doing an engagement and both Dow and Gerling’s names came up in the conversation.

Gerling will be the first of the series, sharing her short story, Preserving Wisdom in Ignite Impact, reflecting on her personal journey to understanding life’s greater meaning and purpose. Motivated by a desire to share her insights with her children, Gerling began writing what would become a legacy of love and guidance.

Dow originally lived in Macklin and currently resides in Lloydminster. Her short story, Muddy Waters in Ignite Joy shares a glimpse of how the decision to leave her physically and emotionally abusive marriage and give birth to her son led her down the transformative journey of living a more intentional and joyful life.

Wong will finish the series with his book, Beyond Adversity, Dawn Awaits. His book takes readers on a journey from his humble beginnings in China to his entrepreneurial success in Canada’s restaurant and hospitality industries. Wong, who used to live in Provost, Alta., is now retired and lives on an acreage near Czar, Alta.

Wotschell said the series will start with each author reading from their work, followed by questions and discussion from the crowd and refreshments. Wong and Gerling will have books available for purchase, Dow’s book is available on Amazon in paperback or on Kindle.

“Hopefully, we can do this again with other local authors at a later date,” said Wotschell.
