Co-op Vote

The members of the Melfort-based Prairie North Co-op and the Kelvington-based East Central Co-op have voted for amalgamation.

Out of 61 members of the East Central Co-op attending a special meeting Nov. 2, 67.2 per cent voted in favour of the merger. That was followed up by a special meeting Nov. 7 of Prairie North members, where 100 per cent of the 42 members there were in favour. Two-thirds of the members at each meeting had to be in favour for the merger to go ahead.

“The next step is getting our processes aligned and getting all the necessary paperwork completed to make it a legal partnership,” said Randy Wassermann, Prairie North’s general manager. “From there on, it’s working with processes and policies to build an efficient, competitive co-op.”

The general manager said the two co-ops will be officially merged Dec. 31.
