NIPAWIN — The Nipawin town council approved the replacement of the Evergreen Centre elevator during the recent council meeting.
Chelsea Corrigan, the parks and recreation director, spoke on the project at the Oct. 26 meeting, saying the elevator has seen significant repairs and is past its life according to contractors. Times that the elevator is shut down for repairs, including the waiting period for contractors to come out to Nipawin, “does not create an accessible and inviting facility for all patrons,” reported Corrigan.
Thyssenkrupp Elevator Limited will be hired to modernize the elevator with the entire project costing $91,372.00. The town will be covering the full extent of the project with $71,500.86 coming from the Evergreen Reserve and $19,871.14 coming from the Capital Trust Fund.
Thyssenkrupp came in with the lowest amount for the project compared to Access 2000 Elevator and Lift and fit better within the scope of what town staff were looking for for improvements for the elevator.
While the exact turnaround for the modernization was not known at the time of the meeting, Corrigan reported that the system will be completed by the end of the year.
Street closure
Council approved the street closure for the Remembrance Day ceremony that will take place on Nov. 11. The eastbound lane of 1 Ave E. directly in front of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #120 will be closed from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. to accommodate an outdoor service that will adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.
Administrator’s report
Barry Elliot, the town’s administrator, gave his report during the meeting which included an announcement of the town joining the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance as well as work will continue to join Sask 1st Call. Both are and will be terrific things for the town to be involved in, he said.
Elliot also reported that talks are continuing with town staff and CP Rail for a safety station that will hold a defibrillator. The discussion will continue on the size of the station and the location within the town with potential locations including at the Evergreen Centre and at the Centennial and Jubilee Arena Complex.
