RCMP throw the book at theft suspects who flee

Two individuals have been charged with numerous Criminal Code offences after fleeing from RCMP.

Friday, March 6, at approximately 5 a.m., Battlefords RCMP responded to a complaint in the RM of Battle River of a break and enter at a rural farm building. Battlefords RCMP identified three vehicles at the scene and attempted to make a stop, when the vehicles fled. 

While on Highway 16 eastbound, a Chevrolet Silverado was identified by RCMP and pursued for a short duration. A spike belt was utilized, but was unsuccessful, and the vehicle travelled out of sight of Battlefords RCMP members, heading towards Maidstone RCMP detachment area.

A short distance down the highway, Maidstone RCMP intercepted the vehicle and attempted to stop the fleeing vehicle. The vehicle turned onto a grid road, and then reversed, slamming into a marked police vehicle. 

The lone male RCMP officer driving the vehicle was treated and released from the hospital.

A short time later the 18-year-old male driver of the Chevrolet Truck and a youth passenger were taken into custody.

Both individuals are from Red Pheasant First Nation. They will be appearing at North Battleford Provincial Court on March 9 to face the following charges:

Youth:

Break and enter, failure to stop while being pursued by police, possession of stolen property under $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of  B&E tools, theft of motor vehicle (sled), mischief, dangerous operation of a vehicle, assault police officer with weapon, resist police officer , theft under $5,000.

Kyle Gavin Soonias, born Jan. 13, 1997:

Break and enter, failure to stop while being pursued by police, possession of stolen property under $5000, possession of stolen property over $5000, theft of motor vehicle (sled), possession of  B&E tools, mischief, two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle, assault a police office with a weapon (bottle),  assault police officer with a weapon (truck), theft under $5,000, impaired oration of a vehicle, impaired operation of a vehicle over .o8, resist police officer, common nuisance.

The youth under the age of 18 is not be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

All three vehicles involved in this incident were recovered. A Ford F150 was recovered on Red Pheasant First Nation and a Ford F250 was recovered near Red Pheasant First Nation. The Chevrolet Silverado was located south of Highway 16 near Delmas.

No other collisions or injuries were reported, as a result of this incident.
