Battlefords RCMP responded to about 42 calls for service between 6 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 and 6 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15.

Police responded to nine motor vehicle collisions, two common assaults, two disturbing the peace complaints, one drug possession investigation, five mischief complaints, three false 911 calls, five traffic complaints, one animal welfare complaint, one municipal bylaw complaint and one report of found property.

Saturday

• A male patient at the Saskatchewan Hospital assaulted another patient and staff members with a weapon, then caused considerable damage by discharging several fire extinguishers inside the facility before escaping on foot. He was located by police a short time later and taken into custody. Charges of assault with a weapon and mischief are pending. The victim of the assault was treated at Battlefords Union Hospital for injuries received in the assault.

• A male driver was located on Highway 40 in care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol. Once at the detachment, the man resisted being moved into the cellblock and attempted to assault the arresting officer, but was restrained and subdued without injury to police or himself. Charges of impaired care and control of a motor vehicle, refusing a breath sample demand and resisting and obstructing a police officer are pending.

• A man was reported to be causing a disturbance at a residence on the Saulteaux First Nation. Police attended and took the man into custody, further investigation revealed he had assaulted his common-law spouse. Charges of assault in relation to family violence are pending.

• Police called to a residence on Panton Avenue in North Battleford for a complaint of sexual harassment that was determined to be unfounded.

• Police attended a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 16 near Denholm in relation to the poor weather, visibility and road conditions. Both westbound lanes were closed for approximately two hours while police, ambulance and towing companies worked hard to open the road to traffic before further collisions occurred. After attending the original collision complaint, one of the police vehicles was struck by a vehicle involved in the second series of collisions at the same location. Thankfully no injuries resulted from these collisions.

• Police attended a report of a motor vehicle collision on 110th Street in North Battleford, where a power pole was struck and knocked down, leaving the hazard of live wires to be dealt with. SaskPower quickly attended and dealt with the hazard. Investigation revealed the vehicle was being operated by a 14-year-old driver who had been consuming alcohol. Several charges were laid on the 14-year-old under the Traffic Safety Act after it was determined that the blood alcohol content was not high enough to support impaired driving charges under the Criminal Code.

• Police received a complaint of people having sexual relations in the shared laundry room of an apartment building in North Battleford. On attendance, the couple was located in the building’s laundry room, however there was not enough evidence to lay charges in relation to committing an indecent act. The couple were warned and advised to find a more private setting for graphic displays of physical affection, even on Valentine’s Day.
