Sask. man accused of racking handgun near SkyTrain crowd seeks bail

Richard Petit allegedly attempted to shoot a loaded Glock handgun outside a busy Surrey, B.C., convenience store across from the SkyTrain

SURREY, B.C. – A North Battleford man who allegedly attempted to shoot a loaded Glock handgun outside a busy Surrey, B.C. convenience store across from the SkyTrain is seeking bail.

Thirty-six-year-old Kevin Richard Petit had an appearance in Surrey court Tuesday and his lawyer requested an adjournment until April 29 for a bail hearing.

In February, the convenience store owner and bystanders wrestled Petit to the ground after he allegedly racked a loaded handgun and was about to shoot, say Metro Vancouver Transit Police. Before someone pulls the trigger, they pull back the slide to chamber a round into the handgun.

Metro Vancouver Transit Police say they were called to the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station at 11:45 a.m. on Feb. 24. They say Petit was standing outside a convenience store across the street from the transit station. When transit police officers arrived, Petit had freed himself and was running away. Police chased Petit on foot and arrested him behind a neighbouring business. A loaded Glock 19 handgun was found inside his waistband.

One officer was injured during the arrest and taken to hospital. He was released shortly after and recovered at home, say police.

Petit was charged with having a loaded, prohibited/restricted firearm, possession of a firearm without a license, possession of a prohibited firearm without a license, and possession of a firearm contrary to a court order.

Metro Vancouver Transit Police say Petit is considered a high-risk violent offender.

According to court records, Petit also goes by the alias of Kenneth Ratt. The charges against Petit haven’t been proven in court.
