The sentencing hearing has wrapped up for now for the individual charged in connection to the April 6 bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos.
A sentence will be handed down March 22 for Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, who entered guilty pleas to 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm in connection to the crash.
Sentencing submissions from the Crown and defence took place Thursday in Melfort. The Crown called for a sentence of 10 years in jail plus a 10 year driving prohibition. The defence did not come up with a specific recommendation but did note that the usual range for dangerous driving causing death is between 1.5 and 4.5 years in jail.
Earlier this week, victim impact statements were read in court by the families of those who were killed or injured.
Sidhu was the driver of the semi that impacted with the Humboldt Broncos team bus at the highway intersection near Tisdale. The bus had been on its way to a playoff game in Nipawin at the time of the collision.
The venue for the sentencing decision on March 22 will be the same one where the sentencing hearing took place this week, the Kerry Vickar Centre, which is being used in place of the provincial court house to accommodate the large number of people providing victim impact statements this week.
