The Battlefords Humane Society is participating in Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month for the first time. Kipper is just one example of the appealing animals brought to the shelter for reasons of incompatibility, not behavioural issues.

Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month has started at the Battlefords Animal Shelter for the first time.

The event was created to raise awareness of the number of animals in shelters and to encourage prospective pet owners to adopt their pets rather than buy them from a pet store or a breeder. The event also aims to fight the popular preconception that shelter pets are less desirable than pets from a breeder or pet store.

"The most common reason pets are brought to shelters is because of an incompatible fit, not behaviour issues," explained Michelle Spark, the shelter co-ordinator of the Battlefords Humane society.

The adoption price also includes spaying or neutering, micro-chip installation, vaccines, a vet check, and 30 days of free pet insurance.

Last year, 790 dogs and cats came into the shelter. Of those, 147 were reclaimed by their owners and 553 were adopted. The remaining pets had to be euthanized. Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month is intended to decrease the number of pets who are euthanized.
