Grade 4 were treated to a hearty dose of the drama, tedium and decorum of the political process last week, as the Speaker of the Saskatchewan Legislature, Dan D'Autremont, came by to put on an "educational outreach program." Also on hand were Battlefords MLA Herb Cox and veteran Brodie Partington.

Dressed in his robes and "pirate hat," D'Autremont guided the Connaught students through the stages of a bill, from its first reading to the issuing of royal assent.

The process was a complicated one for the shy fourth-graders, who needed to be guided along slowly. But, if nothing else, D'Autremont hoped that it would instill in them the democratic nature of our political process.

After the "Healthcare Bill" had received its royal assent, the students also received a lecture from Partington, about the fact that our freedoms in democracy come at a price.
