Construction of the final two components of the Credit Union CU Plex is expected to begin late this spring, according to a City of North Battleford news release.
In February, city council approved a contract to construct the field house (sponsored by BTC) and Northland Power Curling Centre components, awarding the projects to Scott Builders of Red Deer, Alberta for $17,709,949.
"The field house and curling rink are in the design phase now. Meanwhile, there's quite a lot going on at the site with construction well underway on the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts and Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre," said Keith Anderson, acting director of Parks and Recreation.
Two massive cranes are erecting the steel frames of the performing arts centre and aquatic centre and crews are working to thaw the ground as both projects are slightly behind schedule due to below seasonal temperatures. Gas, power, telephone and cable are scheduled for installation on the site this summer. Contracts have been signed with SaskEnergy and SaskPower.
"Both of the general contractors for the theatre and aquatic centre have been very co-operative and are capable of delivering good, finished products," said Anderson. "The original steel erector, however, was replaced due to performance related issues, not financial, as was previously reported to the City."
The cost of all four components is projected at $50 million. Anderson said to date, change orders have not been financially significant.
All four components are expected to be complete in late spring 2012.
