STAR CITY — Queen’s Bar & Grill in Star City has been destroyed by a structure fire, resulting in the town promoting a GoFundMe made for the family and tenant who lived upstairs.
The fire occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on March 12.
Sam Abbott, the community’s fire chief, said the building was a total loss. This included the foundation which survived the previous fire in the 1960s.
“The first one, when it went down, they didn’t save the building at all, but the foundation was saved so they used that to build the new one on top of it,” Abbott said.
“With a small community like this it’s hard to see something like that go because we don’t have much here anymore.”
Assistance was utilized from the departments in Melfort, Naicam, Tisdale and Prince Albert.
“We had three pumpers going, Prince Albert came with the air tanks to fill the ones that were empty,” Abbott said.
“Everybody pitched in and helped us out here and it saved a lot of things.”
The fire was contained without spreading, which he said was a risk.
“It was a pretty big large blaze going on there and then we had pine trees across the street. So we had to watch that too because that’s the way the wind was blowing towards. There were a lot of sparks coming out.”
The fire took crews about 10 hours to extinguish.
Abbott said he doesn’t know the cause of the fire, but it’s believed to have originated from the kitchen.
