It was a morning of acknowledging academic excellence at the Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) academic awards assembly on June 12.

Thanks to donors from across the region, HCI gave out 21 awards totaling $20,000 with another $7,000 worth of awards being given out during the graduation ceremony on June 28.

While many of these awards have been long standing within the HCI community, two annual awards were new to the assembly, including the Bob Ford Award for Photography and the Brody Hinz Memorial Character Award.

The Bob Ford award was created in honour of Bob Ford and his large donation of equipment and cameras to HCI’s photography 30 class earlier this year. Ford was impressed with the work on display at the Humboldt and District Gallery during the 2017 class exhibit. Ford was also terminally ill, said photography 30 teacher, Dawn Goosen, and wanted to share his love of photography with future photography students.

Adam Eichorst received the inaugural award for his passion and dedication to the photography 30 class. Eichorst also played an integral role in the creation of the award to honour Ford’s memorial contribution to photography at HCI.

HCI also retired their character education award with Brody Hinz being unanimously declared the award recipient.

HCI school was made better by the presence of Brody Hinz, says Principal Cory Popoff, not just by his words but also his actions. The goals and virtues of HCI are written on the wall in the HCI common area. Hinz exemplified all of those virtues, says Popoff.

“For Brody, he made us all better people for being around him.”

The Brody Hinz memorial character award was created in its place to honour Hinz’s legacy of kindness and caring at HCI.

Two awards will continue to be given out in future years, one for a junior recipient and another for a senior recipient who, in their own way, uphold the positive virtues that were often seen by Hinz. This year’s winners of the first award were Lauryn MacLean for the junior category and Amy Plaquin for the senior.
