The RCMP in Saskatchewan reported a busy Labour Day weekend on the roads during its province-wide traffic safety blitz.
The highly-publicized operation by its traffic services units across the province resulted in 660 charges in north central Saskatchewan. Those included capturing two impaired drivers and seizing a large amount of illegal alcohol.
In separate incidents, two drivers were charged and had their vehicles impounded for driving in excess of 165 km/h on the highway. Ten drivers had their cars impounded for various dangerous practices during the weekend.
The patrols by RCMP Traffic Services were highly-visible along major traffic arteries in Saskatchewan including highways 11 and 16, in an effort to deter high risk driving practices such as speeding, using cell phones or failing to wear a seat belt.
Electronic signs along Highway 16 between the Battlefords and Saskatoon notified motorists of the greater police presence.
Unfortunately, while the effort to stem the recent tide of fatalities on Saskatchewan roadways was evident, there were still a number of fatal incidents over the holiday weekend.
A motorcyclist was killed Friday on Highway 11 at Duck Lake. Also Friday, a man died near Turtle Lake after two vehicles collided. Saturday evening also saw two people killed in a crash on Highway 355 east of Sturgeon Lake.
