ONION LAKE – A 27–year-old man with a history of arrests for a high-speed police chase involving a totalled police cruiser, firearms incidents, a police standoff, and drug trafficking offences, faces a new round of charges.
Michael Patrick Hill of Onion Lake Cree Nation had a court appearance on July 16. His lawyer, Rhonda Camplin, appeared on his behalf in Onion Lake Court and asked for an adjournment. Crown prosecutor Brynn Achtymichuk consented and Judge Stephen Kritzer adjourned his matter to Aug. 6 when Hill is expected to appear by CCTV from Saskatoon Correctional Centre and enter an election.
Hill's new charges stem from incidents in August and September 2024.
On Aug. 3, 2024, he allegedly took police on another pursuit on Onion Lake Cree Nation. In that incident he is charged with evading police, dangerous driving, driving while prohibited, and failing to attend court.
Another incident on Sept. 24, 2024, is also related to an incident in Onion Lake that led to further charges of driving while prohibited, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, being unlawful at large, and breaching release conditions.
Hill has been arrested and released numerous times. In 2023 a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court.
In February 2025, Hill, now 27, was denied bail and a publication ban was placed on the hearing.
High-speed chase and police crash
In January 2021, Alberta RCMP arrested Hill following a police pursuit that began in Vermillion and ended near Sherwood Park. During the chase, an RCMP vehicle rolled into the ditch, injuring an officer, who was treated and released from hospital.
Hill was initially charged with assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, dangerous driving, flight from police, driving while prohibited, and possession of stolen property. Several charges were later withdrawn, and he was convicted of dangerous driving, fleeing police, driving while prohibited, and breaching release conditions. He received a four-year prison sentence, with credit for time served.
Standoff with police and evacuation of public
On Nov. 15, 2023, Lloydminster RCMP surrounded a home in the 4300 block of 32 Street after spotting Hill inside. Police evacuated nearby homes, believing he might be armed. After a standoff lasting several hours, Hill surrendered.
A search revealed more than an ounce of cocaine and an ounce of methamphetamine, leading to drug trafficking charges.
