Two more candidates have officially come forward in the race for city council in North Battleford and both are familiar names.

One is Councillor Don Buglas, who filed his nomination papers late last week.

Buglas, a school principal and the current chair of the city's Parks and Recreation Committee, is seeking his fourth term on city council. During the 2009 municipal election, Buglas received the highest vote total of all the candidates running for council.

Also confirmed as a candidate is Steven Cormons. This is the fourth time Cormons will have his name on the ballot in a race for a seat on North Battleford council. He filed his nomination papers Monday.

That brings to three the number of candidates seeking election in North Battleford's council race, with several more candidates expected to come forward over the next several days. Election day is Oct. 24 and nominations will be accepted at City Hall until 4 p.m. Sept. 19.

The two latest candidates join Councillor Ron Crush in the council race. Crush, seeking a second term, was the first to file his nomination papers Aug. 31.

"I'm really excited about another opportunity to represent the citizens of North Battleford in a council capacity," Crush told the News-Optimist last week.

He sees infrastructure - "everything above and below the ground that's operated by the public and managed by the city" - as a key issue and wants to see lobbying of upper levels of government for support for water and sewer infrastructure.

Crush also expressed support for the city investing in other areas of the community, pointing to the CUPlex as one recent example. He also remains interested in policing issues and expressed support for initiatives to improve safety in the city.

Overall, Crush expressed support for the policies currently in place at City Hall.

"There have been some decisions that have been made by council in the past three years and I want to be there to support and defend them, and continue to help with those successes," Crush said.
