Throwback: Santa’s new helper

From the Dec. 6, 1967 edition of the Tisdale Recorder

Tisdale’s Santa Claus Day coming up Saturday, will enter a new era this year. For the first time, the old boy in the red suit will be bringing along his helper – Mary Christmas.

Tisdale merchants have felt for quite a while that Santa Claus Day was getting a bit rundown and this year, when it was suggested that Mary be invited to come, they all agreed it would be a good idea. Then they doubled the budget for the event and topped all previous give-away programs.

From what I can find out about Mary, she has never before appeared in public, but has worked in the background helping Santa for as long as she can remember. This year, when she heard of all the gifts and prizes being offered by Tisdale merchants, she felt duty-hound to help Santa distribute them.

And they are going to be a busy pair, with literally thousands of items to give away, as well as visits to be made to the theatre, the hospital and Sasko Park Lodge.

When you bring the kids into town for the goodies on Saturday, make sure they get a chance to see not only Santa, but Mary, too. I had the pleasure of taking her photograph during a sneak visit last Sunday – and she’s a real doll!

I predict that when other towns learn of Mary’s visit to Tisdale they’ll all come up with a similar character next year. Then Santa will be cussing, while all his helpers are cavorting around the country-side passing out gifts instead of staying at the North Pole and getting the work done.
