With the recent hot weather in combination with a very wet June has created ideal conditions for the appearance of the Culex tarsalis mosquito.

With everyone wanting to take advantage of summer to be outdoors, WPD Ambulance is encouraging everyone to make sure they protect themselves and their family before heading outside.

Operations Manager Jason Toovey recommends these precautions:

Wear light coloured long pants and long sleeved shirts;

Limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when the mosquitoes are most likely to bite;

Use mosquito nets over play pens, strollers, and carriages for infants. Do not use DEET on children under six months old;

Keep mosquitoes from entering your homes by using screened windows and doors. Keep screens in good repair;

Keep grass cut short; and

Eliminate all standing water where mosquitoes can lay their eggs, such as in tires, flower pots, paddling pools, and bird baths.
