Tisdale and area residents will have the chance to ask the RCMP some questions and learn about establishing citizen groups to combat crime.
The Tisdale RCMP will hold a town hall meeting at the Civic Centre March 29 at 7 p.m.
“It’s been something that’s been happening across Saskatchewan,” said Sgt. Daryl Andrusiak, the Tisdale RCMP’s commanding officer. “It’s best practice to get out into the community and let them know what we’re working on.”
Since rural crime is a subject that’s of great interest lately, Cpl. Mel Zurevinsky, a Regina officer tasked with helping citizens establish rural crime watches and urban-based citizens on patrol groups, will speak at the event.
The local police will also talk about their annual performance plan and how they’re meeting their goals before opening the floor to questions. Andrusiak said he hopes to get a better understanding of what people of the area think they should be concentrating on, what they’re doing right and what they can improve on.
“It’s an opportunity to be out there, fielding questions and providing some education to the people that we serve,” he said.
This is the first time Andrusiak has conducted a town hall meeting as a commanding officer. He said he’s not sure if public events like this will become annual events for the Tisdale RCMP.
“I could see it being something that we may utilize more moving forward,” he said. “I think it is a good opportunity not only to talk about the issues but for people to get to know the detachment and the members within as well.”
