North Battleford was the scene of a minor train derailment Wednesday evening.

The North Battleford Fire Department responded to a call just after 10 p.m. Wednesday where three railway tanker cars went off the tracks. Two of the cars contained crude oil and asphalt in the other, but there was no spillage from any of the cars.

The derailment occurred around 5 p.m. south of Railway Avenue and 97th Street near the old creamery. Fire Chief Albert Headrick said, in a press release from the City of North Battleford, he believes the reason the call didn't come into the fire department until five hours later is "because of no spillage, human error and no immediate threat to the environment or public."

Headrick also said he believes "discussions with CN about this incident are necessary."

As of Thursday morning, the train was running once again.

NBFD cites a wrong switch being aligned while connecting rail cars together as the cause.
