"Trudeaumania" was the story in Battlefords-Lloydminster and across the country in the federal Liberal leadership race.
As expected, Justin Trudeau won a landslide victory in the leadership vote, according to results announced April 14 in Ottawa.
He received roughly 80 per cent of the electoral vote tabulated from ridings across Canada, with 24,668 out of 30,800 electoral votes cast.
It was an overwhelming victory for the Papineau MP and son of former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who easily defeated five challengers to win the leadership on the first ballot.
Votes were cast by Liberal members and supporters who registered to take part in the leadership election, with popular votes reapportioned according to a points formula that gave each riding equal weight in the final tally. It was estimated more than 100,000 votes were cast in ridings across Canada by Liberal voters.
Each riding was apportioned 100 points that counted towards a national electoral total of 30,800 across the country.
Not surprisingly the Battlefords-Lloydminster constituency ended up joining the wave of support for Trudeau across the country.
According to results posted at the Liberals' website, a total of 51 Liberal supporters out of a possible 58 registered voters cast their votes in the riding.
That total was then reapportioned to make up the number of points that counted towards the final result. In that final tally, Trudeau received 80 points from Battlefords-Lloydminster, with nine for Martha Hall Findlay, five for Joyce Murray and three for Karen McCrimmon. Deborah Coyne and Martin Cauchon failed to receive any votes in the riding.
