An Onion Lake Cree Nation woman arrested by the RCMP gang unit wasn’t released on bail after appearing for a show cause hearing in Lloydminster Provincial Court Aug. 27.
Wanita Harper, 30, is charged with break and enter, resisting arrest, fleeing from police, driving while disqualified, refusing to provide blood alcohol samples, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.
Her co-accused, Cheyenne Harper, 27, of Lloydminster, had a show cause hearing Aug. 31 in Lloydminster Provincial Court and was granted bail.
The two, along with Lyndon Belly, 34, of Onion Lake Cree Nation, were arrested after the RCMP Crime Reduction Team was sent to Onion Lake Cree Nation Aug. 12 to 16 to fight gang activity.
Police say they tried stopping a vehicle for a traffic violation on Aug. 15 but the driver refused to stop. The CRT RCMP officers put spike belts on Hwy 17 twice in an attempt to stop the vehicle but the truck left the highway.
Police followed the truck and saw two women and one man flee from the vehicle. The three broke into a nearby residence trying to avoid police but the CRT officers arrested Wanita Harper, Lyndon Belly and Cheyenne Harper. Police seized $2,085 in Canadian currency, drug paraphernalia and a small amount of cocaine.
Belly was charged with break and enter, resisting arrest, possession of property obtained by crime and possession of cocaine. Cheyenne Harper was charged with break and enter and resisting arrest.
Belly has a show cause hearing Sept. 14 in Lloydminster Provincial Court. Cheyenne Harper is scheduled to appear Oct. 7 for election. Wanita Harper is scheduled to appear Sept. 3 for election.
The charges against the three co-accused haven’t been proven in court.
The RCMP CRT members collaborate with communities and partner agencies to reduce gang violence and activity. There are two CRTs operated by the RCMP in Saskatchewan – Prince Albert and North Battleford. Provincially funded police resources in Saskatoon, Regina and Prince also have CRTs.
