A 70-year-old man from Lloydminster has been charged under the Traffic Safety Act for driving without due care and attention following a four-vehicle collision.
Maidstone RCMP report that Monday at approximately 6:15 p.m., the detachment was dispatched to a multiple-vehicle collision with injuries on Highway 17 north of Lloydminster at Township Road 514.
Highway 17 was shut down at the intersection of township 514 between 6:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. due to vehicles blocking the north and southbound lanes of the highway. Four vehicles were involved. Three sustained varying amounts of damage and all required a tow from the scene. A fourth vehicle took evasive action and entered the westbound ditch to avoid a collision. The drivers of two vehicles were taken by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
It has been determined that a grey SUV was northbound and attempting to turn westward at Township 514 when struck from behind by a northbound blue pickup truck. Subsequently, an oncoming black truck travelling south was also struck on the side by the blue pickup truck, causing it to spin out and block traffic in the northbound lane.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are a factor in this collision, police say. The road and weather conditions were described optimal .
The Maidstone RCMP would like to remind the public of the importance of staying engaged while driving and to remain aware of surrounding conditions at all times.
