The transition towards the city’s takeover of waste management services from previous contractor K & B continues.
Council had previously approved a resolution to take over waste management instead of contracting out the service. An update on the transition was provided Monday by the City’s Director of Operations Stewart Schafer.
Schafer said an Atco trailer for office and staff use was purchased and delivered in June.
A compactor has been purchased from Marcel Equipment from London, Ont., with that equipment to arrive at either the end of August or early September. Schafer said that equipment is currently being ripped down and rebuilt. “It will, for all practical purposes, be a brand-new machine.”
The remainder of the equipment is being purchased from K & B Construction. Schafer said they are in final negotiations with them, stating “we still need some of their equipment at the facility.”
It will be purchased and inspected to determine the maintenance needed to meet the City's requirements.
The competition for jobs at the waste management facility closed July 15 and administration is currently reviewing and interviewing selected candidates.
Schafer noted that they were surprised to learn that David Keys has decided not to apply for the foreman’s position, as he plans to retire. However, Keys has agreed to take on the role for an interim period until a suitable candidate is found, and has agreed to be available for consulting on the operation of the facility.
