A Whitefish man was found guilty of assaulting a peace officer and weapons offences during a trial in Prince Albert Provincial Court April 17.
Henry Ratt, 23, was arrested Oct. 19, 2019, by Big River RCMP after trying to flee from police. Police had attempted to stop him after they noticed a red-coloured Chevrolet Monte Carlo driving slowly and all over the road. They tried stopping the vehicle but the driver sped away at a high rate of speed.
The police didn’t pursue but a short distance away they noticed marks on the road they believed to be consistent with a vehicle turning at a high rate of speed. They followed the tracks that led to a dirt road and discovered the Monte Carlo with four people in the vehicle. One person fled but was captured a short time later with help from the North Battleford Police Dog Service.
Police searched the vehicle and located a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun with 20-gauge ammunition, a .308 calibre bullet, a machete, knives, four cell phones, a baton, masks, zip ties and $2,895 in cash.
For assaulting a peace officer, Ratt was sentenced to 30 days time served while waiting for a trial. He was also sentenced to 149 days concurrent (time served) for obstructing a peace officer, 149 days concurrent (time served) for operating a vehicle while impaired, 60 days concurrent (time served) for failing to provide a breath sample, and 149 days concurrent (time served) on a weapons charge.
