W. Brett Wilson is one of 50 people named to the Order of Canada last Thursday by Governor General David Johnston.

He is one of 35 to be awarded the title of Member of the Order of Canada, recognizing "a lifetime of distinguished service in or to a particular community, group or field of activity."

Wilson was named to the Order of Canada, according to the Governor-General's news release, for "his contributions as an entrepreneur, community leader and philanthropist."

The Calgary-based Wilson is chairman of both Canoe Financial and Prairie Merchant Corporation and a cofounder of FirstEnergy Capital Corporation, recently served as one of the "dragons" on CBC's Dragons' Den show. He is currently working on his own show Risky Business, to premiere this fall on the Slice Network.

Another 15 were named to the higher rank of Officers of the Order of Canada. Among those honored include Hayley Wickenheiser of Saskatchewan, honored for her achievements as an athlete and for her contributions to the growth of women's hockey.

Wilson is well known in the Battlefords for his financial support of a wide range of local causes.
