The opening Sunday of the City of North Battleford’s Wintertainment Week drew about 125 people to Rotary Plaza at the CUplex to enjoy the skating on the brand-new Smartrink, snow angel and snow castle contests in the freshly-fallen snow, music, hotdogs and marshmallows roasted over an open fire.
And hot chocolate.
“We couldn’t have gotten a better day,” said Candace Dustan, assistant manager of the CUplex.
Wintertainment Week in North Battleford started Sunday afternoon and goes until Sunday, Feb. 21 when the winter festival will close with free public skating at the Don Ross Arena, tobogganing on Don Ross Hill and free hot chocolate.
There are both indoor and outdoor activities. Monday for example, there’s a Family Day two-kilometre walk/run at the NationsWEST Field House and turf time with summer games including horseshoes, bocce ball, bowling and disc golf.
Tuesday, there’s the grand opening of the Smartrink, the synthetic ice rink on Rotary Plaza at the CUplex and then ice games at the Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre. Expect slush puppies, colour ice races, frozen T-shirt games, Freezies, ice safety and games.
There’s something fun for everyone throughout the entire week with free public skating at the Don Ross Arena, tobogganing on Don Ross Hill and free hot chocolate from Tuesday through to Friday.
There will be outdoor traditional games and hot cocoa at the Allen Sapp Gallery Wednesday afternoon and decorating ice lanterns there on the following afternoon.
Friday, it’s drop-in curling and lessons at half price at the Northland Power Curling Centre and then a music jam with The Evening Shift Band at the Hit ’n’ Stay restaurant and bar starting at 9 p.m.
