OPINION: 2017 a success for Tisdale

It’s safe to say 2017 was a successful year for Tisdale and area. The biggest reason is because of the almost $20 million in new developments we’ve seen start last year.

It’s safe to say 2017 was a successful year for Tisdale and area.

The biggest reason is because of the almost $20 million in new developments we’ve seen start last year. The new grocery store and Tim Hortons will keep people in town and attract people from all over the surrounding area to visit. The same will be true for the new Beeland Co-op Food Store and Sobeys liquor store coming online in 2018.

Yet it’s not just development that made 2017 a successful year.

We had the Sasktel Men’s Curling Tankard – and pulled it off without a visible hitch. That allowed us to show off the town to the province – and it paid off, with Tisdale hosting the seniors’ curling provincials in 2018.

There was also the Saskatchewan Student Leadership Conference – the second largest in the country – being hosted at Tisdale Middle & Secondary School. Again, it was a successful event that showed off our town’s facilities to the entire province.

If there’s any dark clouds coming for Tisdale in 2018, it’s not coming from inside the town, but what the provincial government’s doing outside of it. We still don’t really know what’s going to eventually happen to all of the staff and assets of the former Kelsey Trail Health Region, something that’s an important part of Tisdale’s economy. There’s less chaos with the other major expense of the province, education, but that too could see negative effects as the province tries to save money in the face of declining resource revenues.

Hopefully 2018 will be another excellent year for Tisdale. Of course, it’s not something that will just happen – it’s something we’ll have to work hard to make a reality.

Happy New Year.
