In its recent budget, the Newfoundland and Labrador government announced it will introduce a tax of 20 cents per litre on sugary drinks, starting on April 1, 2022. This a first in Canada.

The United States banned exports of crude oil in the mid-1970s, as the result of an oil embargo directed at the United States by Middle Eastern countries. The embargo began as a result of American support for Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

A few weeks ago I was talking with the daughter of a beloved family friend. For privacy I will refer to the little girl as Suzy. Suzy is four years old and she was telling me how her favourite show was Peppa the Pig. Intrigued I asked her why.

“Ask not what your vermin can do for you …,” quipped my cousin Cindy as we deliberated, through texts, the merits of this much-maligned beast. Prior to our unusual discussion, she’d sent me a news article from Vice World News.

I found it hard to choose a theme for this week’s article, not because there weren’t ideas in my head but rather that there were so many. On a positive note, our son arrived this weekend for a short but most welcome visit.

Hello once more. May was a long month but we thank God for the refreshing rain toward the end, because God is sovereign. He is in control of the elements. May 9, every mother/woman received a beautiful carnation.
