Update: Missing Ahtahkakoop woman found deceased

AHTAHKAKOOP FIRST NATION — Update July 22: A woman reported as missing has now been found deceased. Her death is considered suspicious in nature.

On July 18, Big River RCMP responded to a report of human remains found in a remote rural area west of Victoire.

In collaboration with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, the deceased individual has been identified as 40-year-old Sherry Michelle Ahenakew from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation. She went by her second name, Michelle. Her family has been notified and Victim Services made available to them.

Michelle Ahenakew was reported as missing to Ahtahkakoop RCMP on June 12. Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes took over the investigation shortly after she was reported as missing.

Major Crimes continue to investigate, and ask anyone with information about her death to contact police by dialling 310-RCMP. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com.

Update June 16: As a result of continued investigation, Michelle Ahenakew’s disappearance is now considered to be suspicious in nature. As such, Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes has taken carriage of the investigation as of June 16.

Michelle’s family has been updated and Victim Services made available to them.

Residents of Big River First Nation may notice an increased police presence in relation to the ongoing investigation.

Investigators ask that anyone who has any information about her disappearance or whereabouts contact police.

Original report June 13: Ahtahkakoop RCMP are continuing their search for a woman last seen on Big River First Nation on June 5.

Police received the report of the missing woman, 40-year-old Sherry Michelle Ahenakew, who goes by her middle name Michelle, on the morning of June 12.

Ahenakew was last seen around mid-day on June 5. She is described as 5-foot-5, 150 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes. She has a scar above her left eye.

RCMP say Ahenakew is known to travel to Saskatoon, Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation and Shell Lake.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP by calling 310-RCMP.  Anonymous information can be provided to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
