Kids in the Kitchen: after-school program with a tasty twist

Cooking program offered to Grades 4 to 6 children.

WILKIE — The Kids in Kitchen program at Norman Carter Elementary offers an after-school program with a tasty twist.

The program started about seven years ago according teacher Melany Kowalchuk as a way for the teachers to be involved with the students outside the classroom. This year the once-a-month program is led by Kowalchuk and teachers Robin Bleier and Cayley McKenzie.

Kowlachuk describes the program as an opportunity for students and teachers to get together in an informal atmosphere to have fun, learn new skills and get to know one another.

It is open to students in Grades 4 to 6 and each month the leaders introduce the participants to new recipes. Over the years the kids have made muffins, cookies, soups, a variety of appetizers, main course type dishes and desserts.

Kowalchuk said parents have commented when the kids get home, they are excited and make the recipes again for the family.

The kids have done a Christmas cookie exchange, plus doing a variety of different holiday themed sessions together.

The students pay a small fee to take part in the program which helps to offset some of the costs.
