REGINA — Casino Regina is planning to demolish its parkade.
The parkade, first built in 2001, has been cracking for several years now.
“Recent detailed structural analysis, which included site testing and inspections, as well as a computer analysis by a local engineering firm, determined that the structure was no longer safe in terms of relative to national building code requirements,” said Brian Miller, director of communications for Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan (LGS)
With this development, Casino Regina has fenced off the parkade.
LGS was left with two options: either fix the parkade or tear it down and create a new parking lot.
Miller said fixing the parkade would have cost 8 to 9 million dollars.
Additionally, there would be annual maintenance fees ranging from $100,000 to $200,000 over the 20-year extended lifespan of the parkade.
Instead, LGS chose to demolish and resurface a new parking lot for $3 million.
”It just made more sense to turn the parkade into a parking lot.”
Miller noted in recent years, only 25 per cent of the parkade’s total 490 stalls were being used on average.
The new parkade will have 370 stalls, which LGS believes can accommodate workers and customers.
Miller mentioned customers also have the option to park on the street or use other private parking.
LGS will pay for this new parking lot from their 2025-2026 annual capital budget.
Miller said it’s normal for LGS to allocate towards their capital budget for expenditures like maintenance/renovations.
The new parking lot will be completed by late September.
