REGINA – This past weekend, while the RPS Aerial Support Unit was patrolling the city from above, officers observed a male suspect entering unlocked vehicles in the Westerra neighbourhood.

ASU alerted ground patrol units, and while they awaited their arrival on scene, ASU had their camera locked on the suspect, watching him go from vehicle to vehicle, checking for open doors. He then stole items from the ones that were unlocked. Many were not locked.

The male suspect was arrested without incident and is facing a number of charges related to the offences.

Regina police say this is not an isolated occurrence. Over the past 30 days, RPS has received reports of 53 thefts from autos where the vehicle was either unlocked or a window was left open. Nearly half of those reports came from the south east/east end of the city.

Police remind the public that while police do what they can to prevent crime and hold offenders accountable, the public needs to do their part too.

-Ensure you are not leaving valuables or anything at all inside your vehicle. Among other items, offenders are stealing debit/credit cards left in vehicles and committing further crimes by using them in tap thefts.

-Take the extra minute to ensure all doors are locked and windows are closed.

The Regina Police Service say they will continue to proactively patrol areas, increase patrols based on crime trend analysis, do what they can to educate the public and hold offenders accountable.
